A
26 hectare mangrove plantation in Panobolon Island,
Guimaras is now being threatened by an oil tanker
that sank in Guimaras Strait leaking tons of fuel,
affecting the local marine and coastal ecosystems.
The mangrove plantation is funded by the Development
Bank of the Philippines under its DBP Forest Program
in
cooperation with the Provincial Goverment of Guimaras
and Panobolon Mangrove Growers Association.
Panobolon
Island, province of Guimaras is home to an
estimated 20 mangrove species, mostly
bakawan, api-api,
bongalon and pagatpat covering
58.78 hectares. |
