A 26 hectare mangrove plantation in Panobolon Island, Guimaras is now being threatened by an oil tanker that sank in Guimaras Strait leaking tons of fuel, affecting the local marine and coastal ecosystems. The mangrove plantation is funded by the Development Bank of the Philippines under its DBP Forest Program in cooperation with the Provincial Goverment of Guimaras and Panobolon Mangrove Growers Association.

Panobolon Island, province of Guimaras is home to an estimated 20 mangrove species, mostly bakawan, api-api, bongalon and pagatpat covering 58.78 hectares.
