The Green Map System (GMS) is a globally designed strategy for promoting and linking the eco-resources within cities. The goals of the GMS are; a) to raise awareness on issues affecting urban areas, b) to cultivate community sustainability, c) to generate fresh perspectives and promote discovery of our communities on a personal level, d) to advocate a more sustainable lifestyle, and e) to encourage networks to work on urban regeneration and regreening. The green site icons lend a global link to other maps being developed worldwide and can be easily understood by those familiar with the Green Map System (GMS). The Green Map System is an international not-for-profit organization that initiated and supports this initiative. At present, there are over 150 Green Map projects of all sizes and scales in 40 countries. The Green Map System offers technical support to Green Map Makers and provides a worldwide network of other Green Mapmakers who could be of assistance.
The Green Map was first conceived in 1991 by New York graphic artist Wendy Brawer , who is now the designer in residence at the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum , as a way of showing people about the other ?green? side of Manhattan , aside from the legal tender that it is known for. The first Green Map, consisting of 143 spots, developed in conjunction with Metropolis magazine at an initial run of 10,000 free copies (courtesy of Interface Inc.) was immensely popular and proved that the Green Map could be ?accessible, resource-efficient and portable?.
In October 1996, these Icons were given a Gold Award by the Natural Resources Defense Council in their First International Eco-Awards! In March 1999, Version 2 was released . This copyrighted Green Map Icon Font is available for use by registered users.
